According to the latest commercial for the new film "Wanted" it is "Scene for scene the most visually inventive, trail blazing film of it's kind in light years!".
Um, yeah I'll let that soak in for a second...
I skipped back on my DVR several times to make sure it really said that and it did. It was written on the screen in big bold letters. The quote's author and source publication are listed under the quote but the font is too small to read on my 36" wide screen. They conveniently forgot to mention the quotes source verbally as well.
So, let's talk about the light-year for a minute. Despite the word "year" being part of the term "light-year", it is NOT a measurement of time. It is in fact used to measure the DISTANCE between interstellar (or galactic) bodies. A light-year is precisely the distance light travels in a vacuum over the period of one Earth year.
At best the quote from the commercial is saying "Wanted is the best movie since last summer" and at worst it's saying "Scene for Scene [wanted is] the most visually inventive, trail blazing film of it's kind in 9.461 x 10^12 kilometers"! Which means what? That this movie's greatness is measured in kilometers?
Well, I am sure the author was trying to say that this was the best film of it's kind ever released, but as I have always said if you don't know the meaning of a term do not use it. I am assuming this guy thinks a light year is equivalent to a million years or some such bullshit.
I know this might seem like a lot of fuss over a promotional quote in a movie commercial but it's because of crap like this that I made this blog in the first place. It is because idiotic statements like this are used to promote multimillion dollar films that I most definitely can't be human.
